Living in an idyllic island blessed with so much nature and culinary delicacies hardly creates an image of people who need to "get away from it all". Yet, for those who do believe they fall under the category of those who are trying to relieve themself of the daily pressure of modern life, there is a place called, Baluarte Rest and Recreation.

There are days when people just want to wake up and savor their own sacred space. To unwind. To relax. To be one with one's inner self.

Baluarte Rest and Recreation in the municipality of Murcia, Negros Occidental is the place to do that.

Baluarte Rest and Relaxation is a quiet retreat nestled in the foothills of Mount Marapara. This haven in the forest is perfect for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Prepare to go completely offline here!

Baluarte is only 40 minutes away from the city of Bacolod. That is really a quick time to be transported to another world - a world of tranquility and off less concern.

Know more about Baluarte Rest and Recreation at https://www.baluarteph.com/ .

Having been Consort to Her Majesty The Queen for over seven decades, he had always been at her side, through thick and thin, in good times and bad, he was ‘Her rock’ as she called him.
I know that many around the globe as well as in the UK, Filipinos included, will sorely miss him. He was a great statesman and ambassador for our country as well as being a loyal companion to Her Majesty as well as respected member of the Royal Family. Prince Philip also served our nation, through his service in the Royal Navy, for which we are truly grateful.
I would to join and send my deepest condolences and prayers on behalf of Filipinos worldwide and everyone here at Fil-Event.com.

He recently painted the Philippines' largest abstract painting!

I have known Lloyd Tronco for thirty years now. We met way back when he was still studying in London.

If you were an adman with a Fine Arts background who also dabbled in out-of-home media or outdoor advertising, how would you celebrate the Philippines' National Arts Month?

Well, you could create a massive abstract artwork, 62 feet high and 40 feet wide, and since it's too big to fit in a gallery, you could install it on a huge billboard frame in the most central of locations on the Metro Manila's major thoroughfare, EDSA.

And because you want the work to be revolutionary, you would just have to locate it right in the center of the metropolis - at the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenues.

Advertising guy and artist Lloyd Tronco did exactly that. I hope to visit Negros when this plague is over for two reasons.

First, Negros plays a big role in sugar production. In the 19th century, we the British fielded a consul in the area mainly because of the sugar industry. An Englishman by the name of Nicholas Loney was stationed in the neighboring island of Panay, in the city of Iloilo, overseeing the trade of sugar between Negros and the west.

Second is my fascination with what I saw when I watched the movie, "Everyday I Love You" with Liza Soberano. The city of Silay in Negros is strewn with beautiful ancestral homes.

I would like to see all these. From the hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers who travel from the Philippines in search of a better life for them and their families, as well as exporting their vital skills to the world, to the countless engineers, mechanics, pilots, architects, seamen and other skilled workers, to the many domestic workers, nannies, carers and housemaids who also perform vital roles around the globe.

Overseas Filipino Workers or OFW’s as they are more commonly referred to as, are a vital workforce or group of people to pretty much every country on the planet. Wherever you travel to in the world, you will most likely encounter a few at least, if not more of these incredible, selfless, hardworking people who give so much of themselves for others. When Filipinos back home in the Philippines are growing up, many study a particular subject, not only to better themselves for domestic employment, but they know in their hearts that in order to provide for their families, they must take the plunge and seek a job abroad.

The sad part of it, is that the Philippines is being robbed of workers with valuable skills and training which could help the country, but the other side of the coin is that Filipinos can still earn much more abroad than they can back home. In fact in some areas of employment, what they can earn in one day in the Philippines can be earned in just 20 mins in some Western countries. That’s the sad reality for some!

I hope that one day, through hopefully constitutional reform and more Foreign Direct Investment, including dropping the 60/40 rule on foreign ownership of businesses in the country, that the Philippines will be able to be more competitive on the global stage and a hub for foreign companies to base themselves in the Philippines. This will in turn lead to greater competition by foreign companies in the Philippines for the best workers and hopefully will also lead to a much needed rise in salaries. I also appreciate the work that this government is doing through the build build build program and other initiatives including recommended pay rises initiatives to help its domestic workforce to stay at home.

I do find it sad though that in the 21st century, we still often read stories of Filipinos being treated as slaves virtually, by ruthless, evil employers and workers being forced to work 18 hours a day or more for only a few hundred dollars a month pay. But even then, the sad fact is that what even these low paid workers still end up earning more abroad than at home.

I hope and pray that one day, just one day, it will no longer be necessary for Filipinos to go abroad for work and to better their lives, but for Filipinos to stay at home. This way, less children will grow up without their parents at their sides, which in some cases leads to broken homes and relationships.

Finally, I would like to send my personal best wishes to ALL Filipino workers globally, thank you for your service and dedication to others, as well as helping not only your own families, but also the Philippines and her people through your dedication and hard work. Mabuhay.

The world will be at a great loss without its Filipino workers I believe, so let’s all applaud and salute them and I hope the world will appreciate them more.

(Photo ctto)

#TheFilipino
#OFW
#Pinoy

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7342628789624162011.post-25406059818055234972020-10-31T02:11:00.001+08:002020-10-31T05:17:12.736+08:00"On my Blog, Fil-Event.com" by Malcolm Conlan

My Google Adsense problem has come back to haunt me. One of my biggest regrets in life.

Just to give a bit of history as to what led up to this massive problem I now face, back in 2010, I used to run a Filipino events website, www.fil-event.com. I used to advertise Filipino events around the world. This was really in the days before event advertising become popular on FB.

My website was number one in the world when you entered the search term ‘Filipino events’. I set up an Adsense account in 2010, so that I could run customised banner adds on the site.

In those days, I was forever changing my phone, always tried to get the latest phone and didn’t really bother to port over my number. I didn’t have a business as such, therefore keeping the same number wasn’t so important to me. I always went for the best airtime package etc, as a result I probably had around 10 numbers in total.

When I set up Adsense back in 2010, I wasn’t really that good on the internet or technology savy. I gave one of my numbers as a reset code should I forget my log in details.

I know the last 2 numbers of that phone number and have spent the last 7 days, almost night and day searching for that number, but to no avail. I hoped that if I found that number then someone else may have it and I could somehow call it.

In 2013, I had completely forgotten that I even had an Adsense account as I had a new website platform at that stage and I therefore opened up an Adsense account, again I didn’t really store the details of it, I just needed it to install on my site. Again, I was able to log in etc as I did so frequently and could remember the details.

Several years down the line, YouTube had really taken off and begun to hear stories that people has been able to use their YouTube income to help others, like the Hungry Syrian Wanderer based in the Philippines and this was something that appealed to me.

Also, so many people over the years had been basically grabbing my videos off FB, some of which had been receiving hundreds of thousands of views!!

It dawned on me only a month or so ago that if they could do it and make money, why couldn’t I do the same to help realise my passion and vision?

So, there I was, with the support of my many followers on Facebook, not only did I manage to gain the minimum required 1,000 subscribers on YouTube to be eligible to monetise, I gained 5k followers in a week!

I knew that you needed 4,000 viewing hours to monetise, that’s equivalent to 240,000 minutes watched. That seemed like a massive target, but I worked out that if most of my subscribers watched one or two videos I would make it. So far, in 2 weeks, I got 6k viewing hours, so applied to be monetised.

Then, I struck an iceberg, Adsense does not allow you to have more than one Adsense account. I had 2.

I have managed to reach out to google, even wrote to the CEO office, they have said there is nothing they can do.

Although I am entering the right email address on the Adsense login page AND google are actually sending me a verification code to the email I used to set up the account, combined with the fact that I have actually been conversing with Google from that email address, so it’s clearly me, the messages I keep getting is that we are unable to verify you.

Then I get a critical red security alert to that same email address where Google have been talking to me, saying that they can’t verify me.

I don’t have the same device I used to set up the Adsense account anymore, this was like ten years ago, laptops don’t generally last that long. Then Google asks you to use the same WiFi, who keeps that same WiFi? Nowadays, we all go for the latest of best deal. helped her with housing and medical care.

Early this year, our

from the Philippines to witness their much-awaited reunion, and to find

My journey commenced when I watched Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Up until that point, I have always been a fan of musical theatre and the arts so when I was younger, my hobby was watching various musicals, concerts and live performances as much as possible. I ended up watching Miss Saigon over 50 times at various locations around the UK as well as in New York.

I was never any good at Geography and to be honest, when I was younger, I never really had an interest in other countries or world affairs, so to be frank here, I didn’t actually have any clue where the Philippines even was or anything about the Filipino people. However, through watching Miss Saigon, I learned that the majority of the cast were Pinoy including the lead role of Kim, (Lea Salonga) and the alternate Kim (Monique Wilson). In those days, (late 80’s and the 90’s) there was no such thing as Facebook so it was hard to follow the lives of these stars or to learn about other cultures via social media channels.

I used to wait at the stage door on many nights, to collect the autographs of the cast and meet them. I even took a few photos, in those treasured days when you actually didn’t know how well your photo had turned out until you got it developed weeks later! (Til this day I still have some Miss Saigon memorabilia which I treasure).

So, I guess I developed a passion for Filipinos and Pinoy culture through my love of the show. I believe even now, Miss Saigon can be credited for bringing over a generation of talented Filipino stars and indeed introducing them to the world stage. You only need to look at the impact Lea Salonga has had around the world in terms of promoting the Philippines and her work in musical theatre. As well as being cast as Kim in London at the sweet age of seventeen, she went on to lead in other shows including Les Miserables where she played Eponine, and even performed at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

There have been successive stars who have helped to introduce Filipino culture and talent to the world stage. These include many other cast members including Monique Wilson, Miguel Diaz, Joanna Ampil, Pinky Amador and now Jon Jon Briones (who starred as the Engineer in the last production in the UK as well as being in the original cast back in 1989) and the collection of more emerging Filipina talents such as Rachelle Ann Go, and the American-born Filipina Eva Noblezada who plays Kim in this amazing revival.

This article however is not really about Miss Saigon, what it is about in fact is the impact the Philippines and Filipino people have had on my life. So many people ask me why I love the country and people so much? I guess through my experiences and the hospitable welcome I received when I made my first trip ever abroad to the Philippines when I was eighteen years old; I have engraved the Philippines in my heart and mind.

So the question remains, why do I have such love, respect and admiration for the Filipino people? There are some eleven million overseas Filipino workers or OFW’s around the globe. You see Filipino’s in nearly every airport, hotel, hospital, care home, airline and other service sector industry around the world, caring for and helping people; be it looking after a sick relative, caring for the elderly, looking after people’s homes or family or serving the public.

Filipino’s are in my opinion a very caring and hospitable people, what helps them to stand out I believe and make them so employable in these sectors is their passion, dedication, empathy and of course their smile and ‘can do’ attitude. Filipino’s are never afraid of working hard to support their families and pursue their dreams. How many Filipino’s do you see relying on benefits or state support? In the Philippines, there is no unemployment benefit or many of the other benefits that we often take for granted here in the UK and Europe. Hard work and sacrifice therefore prevail, to the point of some Filipino’s being forced to leave their homes and families to seek a better life abroad is something all too common and I believe admirable.

Filipinos have managed to blend into society, culture and accommodated to different lifestyles worldwide. My worry with this however is that sometimes Filipino’s may need a voice, as they are often very tragically taken advantage of and mistreated due to their caring, accepting attitudes, unwilling to make a fuss or seem out of place. I never really wanted to become a voice or indeed campaign for Filipino issues and concerns, although through the power of social media and my writing of ‘Open Letters,’ I have stood up and become one of those voices who believe that the Filipino people deserve only the upmost respect and admiration for their contribution to the world. This voice needs to be heard and the rights of Filipino’s worldwide need to be respected and upheld.

Finally, I would like to see a day when leaving the Philippines in search of work and a better life becomes a choice and not a necessity, God bless the Philippines and her people. That's exactly 31 years ago. Last 2014, I watched Miss Saigon again, and having watched it over 50 times in the past, from the opening few weeks 31 years ago, to the 10th anniversary performance in 1999, the one in 2014 was special because it was the LAST EVER night in Drury Lane, on Broadway and around the UK.

Watching the last one was my 4th time to watch the latest version and I was still falling in love with it despite the fact that I have seen it so many times. I was able to be part of the audience for the 25th anniversary gala performance as well as attend the gala party. I didn't think it could get much better than that last evening to be honest!!!

I was totally blown away by the incredible ultimate performance which for me had the perfect cast!

I still found myself crying at least 3 times during the show. It was my first time to watch Tanya Manalang as Kim. I had wanted to see her as the alternate Kim. I guess that stems from me watching Lea countless times as Kim and loving her performance but then actually loving the performance of Monique Wilson, also the alternate Kim in the original production.

I have watched Eva Nobledeza as Kim 3 times now and of course loved her performance. Particularly during the gala when she put so much energy into the role.

That last night though, I really did connect with the story of Kim emotionally through Tanya's performance. For the first time ever, I found myself crying through the scene with Thuy. Have to say I am also a big fan of Kwang Ho in his portrayal as Thuy. He captured the emotion of the role perfectly and is an outstanding vocalist as well as fine actor.

The roles of Ellen, Chris and John were perfectly captured that night by the respective actors. Once again Rachelle Ann Go as Gigi was superb, and she even acknowledged me during the curtain call which was lovely of her as did Tanya.

Awesome night it was. And while all the theatres are still closed, I hope that one of these days, when COVID 19 is eradicated, we will all be able to watch a restage of that amazing musical we all know as Miss Saigon.

Malcolm Conlan

----

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7342628789624162011.post-19717260582865498322020-09-15T04:08:00.000+08:002020-10-07T20:30:00.876+08:00I am deeply saddened as Mayor Cllr Cynthia Barker passes away

I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Mayor Cynthia Barker.

I had always seen her at community events over the years, but had never really got to bond with her until we got to travel to the Philippines together in Dec 2017 on a Megaworld tour that we were both invited to. Liverpool will not only be remembered for the Beatles but it will also be known as the place where the second Jollibee in the UK is located.

I'm a big fan of Jollibee and anything Pinoy. So for me, I didn't mind that it would take me 3 hours and a half to get to Liverpool. I like taking the train anyway.

When I got to Liverpool a day before the scheduled opening of Jollibee, I first made my way to the hotel. I couldn’t sleep in the room though. I was worried I wouldn’t be the first in the queue so joined the queue at 1am on Thursday morning.
It was a very enlightening experience, spending the night on the hard floors of Liverpool streets, I was actually really scared to close my eyes and what with homeless people approaching me, checking if I was ok, one even giving me his blanket, I got to experience maybe how tough life might have been on the streets. I was even given a burger and Coke by 2 ladies who were concerned about me.

My queuing paid off as Jollibee opened nine hours later at 10am and I got to have a taste of my favorite burger.

I ordered the tropical burger. Called the Aloha burger in the Philippines. I actually got to try it already as a special one off in Earl’s Court last month. These people continuously ask me about the possibilities available to come to the UK, to gain employment as a waiter, bar staff, porter and other similar jobs.

Let's start by making it very clear, according the latest figures released in March by the Office of National Statistics, there are 1.86 million people unemployed in the UK at this time.

I am hoping that common sense dictates that if we already have 1.8 million people who are looking for work over here, why would any UK employer look overseas to employ people in unskilled jobs?

Personally I believe that they should, however reality tells me that this would not make any financial sense. Employers would then have to pay for visas, flights, and recruitment costs. This is not feasible for our country, when we have so many citizens seeking employment here already.

The reason why I believe that I need to address this important issue is because I understand that life is already hard enough for Filipinos, who try to support their family back home. This admirable feat is even harder when hard-working Filipinos lose their precious savings, by falling into the traps of these online visa scams.

So how does the scam usually work? The easiest way to summarise my advice is to draw on an old saying, “if it seems to good to be true, it probably isn't.”

The scam that I often come across the most uses a 7-prong approach.

1. People in search of work abroad would usually look online, so the scam is quite easy. Firstly the scammer creates a fake email address, they often just make up a name or find the name of someone who has deceased on the Internet. They will commonly register this with a Hotmail or Gmail email provider, and then they will search online for a photo of a British man to take up this false identity.

2. To make this “identity” more believable they create a fake Facebook account, add some friends, and post some other photos and events etc.

The key to avoiding being a victim here is to look carefully at a persons profile before you accept them on Facebook. What you usually find is that they have very recently opened their account. Maybe they would have just a few friends, mostly other Filipino victims. If they mention they are working, do a search on Google for the employer, add their name in the search and browse further online. Often, the scams originate in Africa, every time I have spotted fakers profile pages; they have common friends from Nigeria or West Africa.

3. They post jobs on the common sites like Gumtree and recruitment websites like Total Jobs etc, giving their fake email address and a UK mobile number. This is usually a fake number, so do your homework and call it. If it doesn't connect, you know it’s not a genuine job advert.

4. Read the advert carefully. There may be spelling mistakes or they may have used American English. Most computers around the world are set to American English, if the person posting the job is British, they would check this.
Also look at postings for jobs requiring common skills, no employer in the UK would look to the Philippines in search of waiters, drivers, cleaners, as people with those skills could already be found here. Maybe if they were searching for nurses, doctors or engineers yes, but they would not be searching on a job site with a Hotmail email account.

5. When they think they have hooked you, then begins the relentless campaign to extract as much money from you as they possibly can. How? First they send you an email asking for your CV and telling you about the job. Again, check for spelling mistakes, bad grammar, unrealistic promises and salaries. If you are not sure of the general salary levels for that job type, check online.

6. The next step is that they attempt to put you in touch with their recommended solicitors. You can usually find that they have searched online and come up with a massive legal firm. They then create a fake website using that name. Study the website, a key indicator to checking any site or company is to call them. If someone answers with “hello, who is this?” it is definitely a fake.

7. Finally, they send you a visa processing form and a request for a 'processing fee' usually around £800 GBP or $1,000. This is how they make the money. Then they ask you to send it, not to the solicitor’s office but to an address overseas, paid by Western Union.

The general rule is that if you apply for any job in the UK and its legitimate, the employer would not expect you to pay any costs,

IF COSTS ARE REQUIRED THEN IT IS A SCAM!

Please be warned and pass this advice along to all your friends and relatives in the UK and Philippines.

Maraming Salamat Po, until next time!

---Malcolm Conlan

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Related Post :

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Looking back to my visit to the Philippines in 2017

In 2017, I was able to visit my beloved Philippines. I have not had the time anymore to ask the permission of Mr. Garcia to post this on my blog, but since the settings have been for public viewing, I know he would not mind my sharing the story. I am both shocked and saddened with this event.

SHOCKING STORY CONFIRMED! (as posted by Byron Garcia, June 15, 2020)

This British National was named Barry Grote and sad to say, he died alone with no relatives in Cebu. Yesterday, June 14, 2020, at around 1PM, Barry complained he had difficulty breathing to the management of OASIS Condo and some friends, so an ambulance was called and was picked up immediately thereafter. When the ambulance reached the nearest hospital, Chong Hua Mandaue, they were denied treatment and were told to proceed to Chong Hua Hospital Fuente, so the ambulance had to go there.

When the ambulance reached Chong Hua Hospital Fuente, they were not received at the ER and were just made to wait from 2PM until 10PM. With no alternative, the patient just waited patiently inside the ambulance and had to wait for any word from the management of Chong Hua Hospital, whether he would be admitted or not. The British national passed the time talking to the ambulance crew the whole time (2PM-10PM) until later, he suddenly went into cardiac arrest. The crew immediately tried to revive the patient by doing CPR and ACLS (advance cardiac life support) while they informed dispatch of the situation. When an officer of the ambulance company arrived, he appealed to the doctors to treat their patient but was refused by two doctors at the ER saying THEY WERE JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS AND PROTOCOL. PASTILAN (OMG)!

While the ambulance crew were still reviving the patient, the Chong Hua doctors and nurses just stood and watch as the patient was hanging on to dear life.

The ambulance officer pleaded the Doctors as the patient needed hospital emergency. At this point the ambulance officer was already surrounded by 5 security guards ready to tackle him. This created a commotion prompting the Hospital medical supervisor to come out of his office and talked to the ambulance officer, after a while, ordered the stretchers out and fetch the British National. But it was too late, he was clinically dead when ER staff fetched him outside the ER compound.

PS: A Caucasian friend of Barry was contacted by the OASIS CONDO management around midnight apparently he is out of the country. A certain Lenny Mills and 3 other friends are currently negotiating with the hospital for his eventual discharge/ cremation soon as they are still contacting his family.
-----

Someone please explain to me why this is so in the Philippines?

Update : Mr. Tim Murray made a note on my Facebook page to give this narrative :

On Sunday, Barry Grote, a British national, was taken by his friends in an ambulance to a private hospital after he complained he had trouble breathing.

One of Grote’s friends was presented a bill amounting to P39,000 for the 30-minute attempt to resuscitate him.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Related Post :

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Looking back to my visit to the Philippines in 2017

In 2017, I was able to visit my beloved Philippines. Sadly, there are individuals, as well as criminal gangs who use applications such as Facebook and especially groups on Facebook to extract hard-earned money from innocent individuals through fraud, romance scams, fake job opportunities, and visa scams.
<div class="p2" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 16px;">

<div class="p1" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">Sadly, a very popular and some would say easy target, are those individuals who are trying to better their lives abroad and escape poverty and hardship. When you are desperate, sometimes, you don’t think rationally, you let your guard down and cling on to the slightest hope that you could have found a way of making your life just a bit better through either forming an online romance or even applying for a job overseas to try to better your life.
<div class="p2" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 16px;">

<div class="p1" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">Whilst I fully understand and appreciate your intentions, I must caution you, that there are many individuals online who will try to trick you into parting with your hard-earned cash and offer nothing in return, except for a few romantic, often scripted words and buckets full of false hope.
<div class="p2" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 16px;">

<div class="p1" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">How does it work?
<div class="p2" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 16px;">

<div class="p1" style="color: #1b1e21; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">It’s very easy to set up a fake profile sadly, online. LONDON, England - The British Man with the Pinoy heart, Malcolm Conlan, recently posted on his Facebook account : Over the last couple of weeks, I seem to spend every spare moment of my day on FB replying to messages and FB posts over imaginary 'jobs' here in the UK. My eyes are becoming really strained.

There are no jobs here for anyone from the Philippines unless they are directly recruited from PH. So no NHS Trusts, shipping companies, airlines, etc. may recruit directly.

But words of warning, if you have to pay any fee whatsoever at ANY stage then it's fake. If they really want you, THEY will be the ones to pay.

Oh well, I guess if I can save one Filipino from shelling out hard earned money bound for fake job agencies either in Africa or Eastern Europe, then this warning is worth it for sure.
Davao, you now have a special place in my

Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Davao for the first time. As most of you know, I am passionate about the Philippines and her people.

I also truly believe that the Philippines is is in very safe hands under the exceptional leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte. You see, I can see that the President is a humble man, a man of his word and a leader who only wants the very best for the Filipino people.

I decided some months ago, that I wanted to visit the home town of the President, Mayor Tatay Digong as he is fondly called. I had heard that Davao was very safe and a well resourced and progressive city.

I 100% agree. As soon as I arrived at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport last Monday, I could see that I was in for a real treat. Everyone was warm and smiling. My cellphone battery had nearly run out and when I asked if I could charge it somewhere, I was greeted with a friendly smile and positive response, nothing was too much trouble.

My companion for the day was a friend who I had met last year in a Ffilipino event in London, Darling Baquiran and her wonderful family.

I was met at the airport by them and we were driven into town by their driver for the day. The first thing I picked up on was the absolute insistence by the driver to wear my safety belt.
To be honest, when I am in the UK, I would always wear my safety belt when in a vehicle without exception.

However, having been to the Philippines 50 times, combined with the fact that some cars don't even have safety belts fitted, I have come to accept the fact that I don't need to wear one

Was I wrong, totally correctly, our driver wouldn't start the car until I had put it on. I asked him about this and he simply said that Tatay Digong taught us discipline when he was mayor.

This is just one of the many excellent safety initiatives I noticed. I only wish that safety belts would be compulsory in all vehicles in the Philippines.

I also noticed that the city was very clean and well managed. The traffic flow was moving well and I noticed that everyone seemed to have a purpose and not just sitting around getting bored.

In the afternoon, I was invited to an interview about my love of the Philippines by Sun Star Davao newspaper. On the journey we needed to check the address on my phone, I noticed that the internet was very good. Much better than in Manila in fact

After being interviewed by the newspaper, I was given a Davao yearbook which I have yet to read, but gives me a bit more history of Davao and the President. Sadly I didn't get time to visit the emergency services, nor the house of the President. However, I did get to visit House of Hope at the Southern General Hospital.

This is a accommodation facility at the hospital, where children can stay whilst they are having treatment for cancer. They have excellent facilities, however they rely on donations to look after the children and provide for them. I was able to make a donation and also pass on a Donation from a friend in London towards their work.

In fact, I had been invited to the House of Hope by Darling Baquiran and family. She personally arranged a small Jolibee party for all the patients and families. With the official Jolibee mascot. Darling's family also entertained the children through singing and dancing.

All the parents were very grateful. This personal act of kindness by Darling, who incidentally is from Davao went a long way to helping the children feel better and more positive. In fact Darling personally supports a number of causes in Davao and also feeds other children in feeding programs. Darling and family are really an inspiration.

I was able to attend the Araw Ng Dabaw last night and found once again, everyone was so friendly and welcoming, warm and happy.

Maraming Salamat po Davao, until next time.
